FAQs

What oil do I use with my chainsaw?
Our units use a standard bar and chain oil. You can purchase this from your local hardware store; no specific brand name is required
Why is my chainsaw leaking oil?
All chainsaws will slowly “leak” oil in storage (mostly from it seeping off the chain). To prevent excessive leakage, store with as little oil left in the reservoir as possible, lay the chainsaw flat with a rag beneath it and the pole saw upright with the motor head at the top. During first use, operators should only fill the reservoir to roughly half full and check periodically to see if it needs to be refilled. Eventually, you will become accustomed to the amount of oil required for each job. This procedure will make it easier to store the unit as oil free as possible and reduce oil run off.
How large of a branch/log can I cut?
If you are looking to cut logs with one pass, the log needs to be about 2" smaller than the bar. However, there are many techniques to use a chainsaw for larger cuts.
What is the run time?
The run time of a chainsaw is measured in cuts per charge. The number of cuts per charge or “run time” that you receive would depend on the load acting on the saw (i.e., the thickness and type of wood being cut) as the chainsaw would use more battery power on tougher and thick objects being cut.
How do I know if my chain is tensioned enough?
Chains should be tensioned before use. Check intermittently throughout each chore to make sure the chain is kept properly tensioned. A correctly tensioned chain should only pull away from the bar enough to fit a dime between the teeth and the bar. ***DO NOT TENSION A CHAIN AFTER YOU HAVE FINSHED USING THE TOOL. HOT METAL EXPANDS. IF THE CHAIN NEEDS TENSIONED WHEN HOT, THEN ALLOW TO COOL, THE CONTRACTING METAL COULD POTENTIALLY DAMAGE THE CHAIN, THE BAR AND EVEN THE UNIT. WAIT UNTIL THE NEXT USE (OR AT LEAST UNTIL COOLED) BEFORE TENSIONING***
Can I use another brand of chain?
Yes, however, it must match the specifications of the original chain (gauge, pitch, and drive links). These specifications my be found inside of your owner’s manual.
What file size do I use to sharpen the chain?
Our chains may be sharpened using a 5/32” round file.
Why isn’t my chain cutting?
If the wood is burning/smoking, this indicates that the chain is on backwards. Another reason could be that the chain is dull and needs to be sharpened or replaced. Replace the chain if: • The length of the cutting edges is less than 5 mm. • There is too much space between the drive links and the rivets. • The cut speed is slow • Sharpening the chain many times but it does not increase the cutting speed.
Why does my chain keep falling off?
Chainsaw chains can come off due to multiple reasons such as worn-down bars, worn-down sprockets, and wrongly set chain tension. Please check the chain tension and condition of all parts prior to using. If anything is worn or damaged, replace parts before using again. Replace the bar if: • the groove is not fit with the height of the drive links (which must never touch the bottom). • the inside of the guide bar is worn and make the chain lean to one side.

Customers praised this 60V 18" brushless chainsaw for its "plenty of power" and ease of use. Many noted it cuts through hardwood logs effectively, with one saying it "cuts like a hot knife through butter." However, some reported issues with chain jumping, limited battery life on smaller batteries, and concerns about oil tank durability. A few mentioned chain sharpness decreases over time.

Just ok

I have had this for a year and it is quite weak at cutting through trees of any sizeable diameter and have used it about 10 times. I think the chain is also not as sharp compared to other chainsaws. I have a corded electric chainsaw which goes through real trees much better. I would suggest this Greenworks chainsaw is really only good for pruning.

Hi Lee. We are very sorry to hear that the 60V chainsaw has not met your expectations. We understand your disappointment. While 60V chainsaws offer significant power, they may still need multiple passes or more effort for extremely large or hard wood. This is because the chainsaw's capacity is limited by factors like bar length, motor power, and wood density. Chainsaw models with 16-inch or 18-inch bars are well-suited for felling small to medium-sized trees and cutting them into firewood. The Chain Blades may need to be sharpened every few months, this does depend on how often the unit is being used. It is recommended to inspect the chain annually; however, proper care and maintenance will prolong the shelf-life. The chain will need to be tensioned periodically during use as sawing is a high friction use, high friction causes materials to heat up, chain is metal. metal expands when heated, chain will need to be re-tensioned to account for this. This unit requires 5/32 round file to sharpen the blades on the chain.

Nice saw

Simple quick powerful. I have been using chainsaws my whole adult life and this is nice. Runs well and operates as per specifications

Seems to have good power cuts fast.

The saw has a fantastic chain speed meaning it cuts pretty fast. Definitely comparable to a decent sized 18 gas saw a co-worker uses. Used for trail maintenance in a state park so light weight is important. A 4AHr battery can make around 8-10 cuts in a 14 inch oak log. Typically also carry a Greenworks pole hedger and another battery so the batteries can be shared.

Battery over gas

I was worried going to a battery operated saw but I love I more then my gas powered already!

Impressive saw!

This saw is such a relief from the old 2 stroke gas powered machines. Quiet no starting problems no storage worries. It did shut down once due to high temperature but that's not surprising given the day's 90+ degree air temp and going nonstop at some big hardwood logs.

Prime the chain oiler before using.

Works well but you need to put oil in the new one and remove the bar and chain and run it until the oiler is primed. I had to put oil on the bar for about 20 minutes before the oiler started to work...

Great Saw awful chain.

The saw is awesome but if you jump the chain off the bar just one time it's toast. I have a pile of blades that no longer fit in the groove of the bar after coming loose just one time never had that problem with any of my other saws. I love the saw the very first one cut many trees until the chain jumped and no longer fit in the bar groove then it jumped again and the sprocket got damaged. I got a replacement sprocket but don't have the tool to replace the sprocket so i purchased another saw and after 20 minutes of using it the chain got loose and jumped the bar and no longer fit in the grooves so I had another on the shelf put that on and used it for another 20 minutes and the same thing happened. My echo saws have never had this issue. love the saw but hate the chains.

60 volt chainsaw

Handy tool for the price. I can't say it's as high of quality as a few other brands but for the price it does a nice job.

Very good light-duty saw for home use but with some caveats

The saw arrived in new and intact packaging. I had bought the tool only as I have several other tools and batteries from the 60V system already. Through a special offer I was able to receive an additional 60V 2.5Ah battery as well. The saw has an adequate oil reservoir with a semi-lucid window to help check the level. It came with a 100 ml bottle of chain oil enough to get you started. Both of those are nice extras. When loading the saw with a 2Ah or 2.5Ah battery it is well balanced. It feels substantial and has a large kickback bar/chain brake with clear labeling on it as to its purpose. When triggering the saw without a load i.e w/o cutting wood the noise coming from the motor is a fairly high-pitched whine but still not loud enough to reach for hearing protection. The pitch lowers when putting the motor under load. When cutting smaller branches the saw slices through them like butter. However I noticed that when I was cutting larger material such as a 5-inch log some kind of protection mechanism kicked in and stopped the chain even with what I would consider mild downward pressure. This did not happen when I let the saw do all the work i.e. only allowed the weight of the say to press down on the bar. So no speed sawing here...Battery life for the 2 or 2.5 Ah batteries leaves something to be desired particularly with large pieces of wood. When using a 5 Ah battery that isn't so much of an issue however the saw then is not well balanced making it a bit more difficult to find the right pressure to not trigger the protection mechanism. Bottom line: an excellent tool for light intermittent use such as yard cleanup and the occasional larger log to dispose of. However I won't retire my Husqvarna 550 just yet because on 11 Acres I occasionally have mature oaks down and wouldn't want to be caught turning one of those into firewood or logs with the Greenwood tool.

Very strong and easy to maintain

I have a greenworks lawnmower with 60V battery. Getting the compatible chainsaw was a good plan. Fortunately the Chainsaw has great power battery life and easy to adjust. I have used it on several projects palm tree removal as well as some very tough plants that it cut through easily

Worked amazingly well until the oil tank crumbled

Chainsaw really impressed me with the torque and ease of use. Took down an entire hill of tan oak trees on 2 4-amp batteries. After 1 year I noticed a tiny leak in the chain oil tank but couldn't locate the issue. On my latest use suddenly oil dumped out of the tank and I found that the white plastic was crumbling. It easily flakes of when touched and has rendered the chainsaw useless. I stopped using it immediately to keep the chain from burning up. Calls to customer service have not replied to and I can't find a replacement tank anywhere. I have a mower string trimmer leaf blower hedge trimmer and power station from greenworks that have been holding up fine and thankfully don't use an oil reserve like the chainsaw.

Presumed electrical issue makes saw unusable

Unfortunately this saw has been a nightmare experience for me despite good experiences with several other 60 volt tools. I had the 16 model from about 2.5 years ago that was awesome … ran maybe 30 mins on 2.5ah battery but the oil tank cracked to pieces and I didn’t register when I bought it so out of luck. I decided to upgrade to the newer model and also step up to 18 with $279 MSRP but has been on sale for $199 for months rather than the older 18 model for $249 MSRP/No Sale. I had seen a fair number of similar complaints afterwards on this newer model but most reviews are pretty positive at this point so I feel like maybe I just got a lemon. None of my 2.0/2.5 ah batteries would work for more than a few seconds and my 5.0 ah would work for maybe 5-10 mins… until that battery mysteriously stopped working altogether. This last part isn’t Greenworks fault directly but unfortunately the shop I was told to bring it to Nottingham MD was awful. Never took 2 mins to hear me explain the problem that I had discussed for about an hour with Greenworks support. They had my saw my killed 5.0ah a ‘working’ good enough 2.0ah to turn it on but not to use it and a charger. Over 6 weeks later I went in and just got everything back because of them having done nothing but incorrectly order a replacement charger when mine was fine. They literally put the 2.0 battery in the saw and it came right on… AS I TOLD THEM IT WOULD. Shame on me for not fighting to have them send me the older $249 one or at least another of $199 Sale Price one. I should have known better than to bring this kind of problem to an old school small engine shop.
