FAQs

What is the difference between auto-feed and bump and feed string trimmers?
Auto-feed string trimmers use centrifugal force to release trimmer line. Each time the unit is activated, the spinning of the trimmer head exerts a force that unlocks the trimmer spool, allowing line to be released. A spring-loaded mechanism relocks the line after approximately 0.25” of line has been release. Therefore, every trigger pull will release line. Bump feed/ bump and feed string trimmers work with a similar mechanism, but the spool lock is manual disengaged by the user by “bumping” the trimmer head on the ground while the unit is in use. This mechanism provides operators with more control over how much line is used.
What attachments are compatible with my string trimmer?
For attachment capable string trimmers, the following brands are compatible: Poulan Pro, Ryobi-Expand-it and Trimmer plus. If you are unsure if you have an attachment capable string trimmer unit, please contact us at 1-888-90-WORKS
Why does my trimmer line keep breaking during use?
Trimmer line will break off during use which is a normal occurrence. In harsher terrain or when used to edge, the string trimmer's line will break off more often as it makes contact with hard surfaces. To reduce line breakage here are some tips: • Keep the underside of the trimmer head/guard area clean of debris. • Ensure that the cutting blade is clean/clear, and the blade is exposed and shard enough to trim the line. This will also help to reduce excessive line breakage. • Avoid direct contact with hard surface areas when using the string trimmer. • In thicker, denser, and longer grass, you may want to go slower. Listen to the sound of the string trimmer, if it reduces speeds, or slows down too much, back away from the grass and start again at a slower pace.
Can I remove the guard from my string trimmer?
No, string trimmers should never be operated without a guard. The guard is a safety feature and helps reduce debris such as grass clippings from being picked up and flung towards the user. It also has a cutting bar on it to prevent line from overextending and breaking off at large lengths. Operating without a guard will cause the string trimmer to work harder than it must and will reduce the life span of the motor. It will also void the warranty.
Why does my line keep unraveling?
Line unraveling can be caused by winding the spool line the wrong way or simply not winding it tight enough. Please make sure you follow the guide inside your owner’s manual thoroughly as this process may take some time to correctly achieve.
What does reduced gear mean for my string trimmer?
A string trimmer that has a reduced gear motor does not directly drive the trimmer head. Instead, the motor drives a larger gear that is attached to the trimmer head. This reduces the speed of rotation but increases the torque. It allows a smaller, lighter motor to produce extra torque and perform tasks more efficiently, while ensuring that the unit is easy to maneuver.
Does my unit come with trimmer line?
Yes, all Greenworks string trimmers come with spool and line that has already been installed in your unit.
Can I use a thicker diameter line than what is recommended?
No, we do not advise using a thicker diameter line than what is advised in your owner’s manual. The use of a thicker line may result in over working the motor and could potentially damage the motor resulting in shorter life span of the unit. This will also void your warranty.
Can I buy replacement line locally?
Yes, you can use any generic brand of trimmer line to rewind your existing spool. Please refer to your owner’s manual to ensure you purchase the correct diameter of line for your unit.
Can I change the original trimmer head?
No, we do not offer this feature currently. However, we do offer attachment capable string trimmer units that can be used with a variety of different attachments from the following brands: Poulan Pro, Ryobi Expand-It and Trimmer Plus.

Awful or non-existing customer service.

I will never buy any Greenworks product. This has nothing to do with the product. Their customer service is a joke If you try to live chat there is no live chat. It is Vivian a robot who does not understand and answer anything. If you try to call you could wait forever. I finally left my number for them to call. So far no call. The isssue is the guard for the trimmer cannot be attached. It will not into the slot for the two screws to reach their holes and tightened. Clearly a manufacturing defect.

Awesome power!

I didn't think a battery powered trimmer would work this well. It was amazing! I'll never buy a gas powered trimmer again. This machine exceeded my expectations 10 fold.

Greenworks String Trimmer 80v and Leaf Blower

About 3 months ago I purchased from Costco my first Greenworks product. The String Trimmer. I suspected that this might be much better than the gasoline engine one I was using for all the good reasons. I love this machine. I bought another the leaf blower. All I can say is I am very glad to be involved in this new innovation.

Received order with missing items!

I received my order 2 days ago. It was missing the Allen Wrench the handle and the green knob. I have tried to contact the company and no response. I did receive the lawn mower and am very happy with it but am furious that the trimmer parts are missing and cannot talk with any representative! What a lousy company!

Received but missing parts….

When the item arrived it was missing the handle and a few bolts. Used the handle from my old one along with some bolts and bought 1 bolt at the hardware store. Seems to work great now after a bit of repair. It was a remanufactured one so I didn’t mind improvising…..

Rugged and gets the job done

I bought this to replace another battery-powered brand that was no longer supported. I've used it quite a bit and it has never failed me. The battery and charger are still working and I believe Greenworks will keep them in their inventory as they are real workhorse. The unit keeps a charge and I can easily trim my 1/3 acre lot on one charge. I also have a Greenworks hedge trimmer and leaf blower. All batteries are interchangeable. I planned it that way.

The 80 volt weed eater

I have owned a 40 volt trimmer for some time now and there were many times when I was trimming I would come across heavier brush that the 40 volt could not handle or would take a few passes to cut down ! have a number of your 40 and 80 volt tools of which I am pleased with . I tested a couple of them and tried sending you feedback on how they were working ! I was really happy when I saw your 80 volt trimmer that said ATTACHMENT CAPABLE thats what peaked my interest the most ! I have gas powered equipment with most of the attachments and was I even happier when I ordered your larger weed eater the first thing I did was get my gas attachments and checked to see if they really were compatible with yours ! Was I a Happy camper . Id take it to my other property and decided to get a second one so I would have one at each location ! You have outdone yourselves ! THANK YOU A VERY HAPPY GREENWORKS CUSTOMER DEL

can't get replacement parts

The part for the spool cover the bump knob is in the manual but not listed in Greenworks' parts directory. Waited for over one hour on the phone to get in touch with a representative and finally gave up when nobody picked up. It is a phanatstic tool when it works but too expensive when you have to replace the whole tool when just the bump knob is worn out!

This Thing Is A Beast!

My old trimmer broke down a few weeks ago. I had switched from a battery trimmer years ago to a 2-cycle one. At the time battery powered yard tools were quite inferior to their gas and oil counterparts. Well that 2-cycle finally bit the dust. I went across the street to see if I could borrow my neighbors trimmer to clean up the rest of my yard as I had a lot to trim. I was apprehensive at first when I saw she had this battery powered trimmer as I am with a lot of battery powered tools like this but that apprehension didn't last long. Once I started using this thing I was sold. I manically went behind my house and found a plethora of stuff to cut down whilst cackling like an idiot just because I wanted to see what this thing was really capable of. Once I collected myself and finished cleaning up my yard I returned the trimmer to my neighbor thanked her and promptly went inside and told my spouse I was going to spend some money. I immediately ordered the trimmer. It's been working like a dream. In the last few weeks since my trimmer purchase I purchased some attachments for the trimmer a chainsaw & I have a mower en route to my house at this moment. I'm sold on Greenworks. Well done.

Highly Recommend 2.5 Ah Battery Powered PROV 80V-16 String Trimmer

I finally purchased the PRO 80V 16 String Trimmer after years of owning a number of gas powered trimmers. The question I ask is why did I wait? The trimmer is easy to use ergonomically set up and lasts long enough on one battery to do the majority of my trimming or roughly 45 minutes of run time. I even use is where I used to use the push mower trimming. The charger / battery set up is smaller than the gas container I use my two stroke lawn equipment with out the odors of gasoline or the mess associated with mixing gas and oil. An added benefit is I do not need to wear the ear protection necessary with gasoline fired trimmers. Do yourself a favor purchase the PRO 80V Trimmer now and throw away your gas powered one today. You will not look back. I plan on adding the blower and chainsaw to lawn care equipment.

Not for thick stuff?

I have loved my 80v chainsaw and leaf blower but half regretting getting rid of 40v dewalt weed eater for this. Power is nice but design of head to gaurd mount seems to jam up longer grass and weeds. Doing heavier stuff seemed to spend more time painfully removing wound up and pinched grass and weeds around head.

Trimmer

It’s pretty powerful the charge last a good period of time. Actually I would put it up against my gas trimmer. The only thing is it is shorter than my gas model so takes a bit to get use to.

80 volt string trimmer.

The original line spool was two separate line. I couldn’t get it to advance and I had open it up and unreel the line and just put one line in. I have only used it once and kind of difficult to remove gras growing out of cracks cement areas.
