FAQs

What is the difference between auto-feed and bump and feed string trimmers?
Auto-feed string trimmers use centrifugal force to release trimmer line. Each time the unit is activated, the spinning of the trimmer head exerts a force that unlocks the trimmer spool, allowing line to be released. A spring-loaded mechanism relocks the line after approximately 0.25” of line has been release. Therefore, every trigger pull will release line. Bump feed/ bump and feed string trimmers work with a similar mechanism, but the spool lock is manual disengaged by the user by “bumping” the trimmer head on the ground while the unit is in use. This mechanism provides operators with more control over how much line is used.
What attachments are compatible with my string trimmer?
For attachment capable string trimmers, the following brands are compatible: Poulan Pro, Ryobi-Expand-it and Trimmer plus. If you are unsure if you have an attachment capable string trimmer unit, please contact us at 1-888-90-WORKS
Why does my trimmer line keep breaking during use?
Trimmer line will break off during use which is a normal occurrence. In harsher terrain or when used to edge, the string trimmer's line will break off more often as it makes contact with hard surfaces. To reduce line breakage here are some tips: • Keep the underside of the trimmer head/guard area clean of debris. • Ensure that the cutting blade is clean/clear, and the blade is exposed and shard enough to trim the line. This will also help to reduce excessive line breakage. • Avoid direct contact with hard surface areas when using the string trimmer. • In thicker, denser, and longer grass, you may want to go slower. Listen to the sound of the string trimmer, if it reduces speeds, or slows down too much, back away from the grass and start again at a slower pace.
Can I remove the guard from my string trimmer?
No, string trimmers should never be operated without a guard. The guard is a safety feature and helps reduce debris such as grass clippings from being picked up and flung towards the user. It also has a cutting bar on it to prevent line from overextending and breaking off at large lengths. Operating without a guard will cause the string trimmer to work harder than it must and will reduce the life span of the motor. It will also void the warranty.
Why does my line keep unraveling?
Line unraveling can be caused by winding the spool line the wrong way or simply not winding it tight enough. Please make sure you follow the guide inside your owner’s manual thoroughly as this process may take some time to correctly achieve.
What does reduced gear mean for my string trimmer?
A string trimmer that has a reduced gear motor does not directly drive the trimmer head. Instead, the motor drives a larger gear that is attached to the trimmer head. This reduces the speed of rotation but increases the torque. It allows a smaller, lighter motor to produce extra torque and perform tasks more efficiently, while ensuring that the unit is easy to maneuver.
Does my unit come with trimmer line?
Yes, all Greenworks string trimmers come with spool and line that has already been installed in your unit.
Can I use a thicker diameter line than what is recommended?
No, we do not advise using a thicker diameter line than what is advised in your owner’s manual. The use of a thicker line may result in over working the motor and could potentially damage the motor resulting in shorter life span of the unit. This will also void your warranty.
Can I buy replacement line locally?
Yes, you can use any generic brand of trimmer line to rewind your existing spool. Please refer to your owner’s manual to ensure you purchase the correct diameter of line for your unit.
Can I change the original trimmer head?
No, we do not offer this feature currently. However, we do offer attachment capable string trimmer units that can be used with a variety of different attachments from the following brands: Poulan Pro, Ryobi Expand-It and Trimmer Plus.

Good purchase!

Works super well! Not too heavy. We already had the battery from the lawnmower so we use it for both.

60v string trimmer

Very disappointed with trimmer, the bump head doesn’t feed the string line it did this right out of the box, I’ve cleaned the bump head and re threaded the line to no avail. I have to take it apart and retread the line every time the string runs short

Terrible stringer

This machine never worked right from the beginning. The string always falls in and you have to remove cap and reload. Work for 10 minutes and do again. Huge pain. Loading the string is also not easy. Can not find how to change remove head for replacement. Purchased this trimmer along with blower and lawnmower all with 60v batteries.

Fine trimmer

Works fine but it requires much more force when bumping on the ground to dispense line than anticipated.

Great addition to my 60v tools!!

Purchase this through a Father's Day sale. Really like that it's brushless and work with my other 60 volt blower chainsaw and push mower. Seems very powerful and like that it has brushless motor which should last quite a while. It also came with a free battery. Seems very easy to load and his balanced well after the battery is installed. Love all the products so far and like the best part of it is not having to deal with gas!!

Easy Assembly and Edges so well

I bought this about a month ago after an edger from a different company died. I bought this without the battery as we already have the cordless mower which we love. Assembly was simple. Clear instructions and some visuals to assist. I would definitely buy this product again for ease of use and quality of product. I have a small lawn that hadn’t been properly edged in a few years due to our less superior prior product. This edger is smooth and sharp. The bump feature that allows you to control the amount of line is fantastic - we didn’t have that on the prior product and I am so so glad to have this level of control. The green works edger comes with two speeds - I’ve only had to use 1 and am still very impressed with the sharp lines produced. The trigger switch is easy to hold. I was worried about the noise - it seems loud when in use - but my husband was trying to sleep while I edged and couldn’t hear me edging right outside their window (my husband is an incredibly light sleeper so I was shocked at this). Battery life is excellent. We do have a very small lawn but one battery for both edging and mowing only uses less than 25% of our battery. There is a slight drawback in that the edger is heavy. We got the 60v so that we can use the same battery for our mower and that does make it hefty. However in the assembly there is a shoulder strap included. I am a fairly young woman so it feels heavy but manageable and not heavier than the product we are replacing - just want to clarify for anyone looking for a supremely light edger. Overall great product so glad it uses the same battery we had for a previous greenworks product would highly recommend.

Does the job

I bought this about 3 weeks ago and have used it that many times. It came with a free 60V 2.5Amp Hr battery and I already had the 4 Amp Hr battery from my prior purchases of a chainsaw and blower. The trimmer cuts well and I was able to trim all of my half-acre lot on a single charge of the 2.5 AH battery. The line feed works well as advertsed.

Worst experience and worst customer service

I ordered a string trimmer. I received it within a few days but it was used. It was scrapped up and damaged. I tried to find a way to get a replacement on their website but there was no way except to call them and speak to someone. I sat in hold for over 2 hours to speak to someone. They eventually sent me an email and asked for pictures. I sent them pictures and they agreed to arrange for Fed Ex to pick it up. Several days later Fed Ex picked it up. Instead of sending me a replacement right away I waited and never heard back. I sent several emails and they responded they sent my replacement but could not provide a tracking number. After several more days and emails they still had no information about my replacement. I eventually asked for a refund which they provided. This was the worst customer service experience after getting a used/damaged product they couldn’t send me a new placement sting trimmer after several weeks of waiting and emails and waiting on hold for hours for cutover service. I will never buy another Greenworks product. Not a good company

Excellent product for women

Cordless and having a rechargeable battery is great. Just the right weight to balance and use with ease. Even lengthening the cord was easy. Highly recommend to saving money on landscapers!

Plenty of power; modestly better in trimmer string release

I’ve been using this about three weeks in conjunction with my Greenworks 25 dual 60v mower and the 710 blower. I am able to do about two hours of work with these three tools using the two mower batteries (4ah power). This trimmer does 3 x 170 feet of street and sidewalk frontage plus another 160 feet of sidewalks and driveway plus about 75 feet of planting beds. By any measure and even compared to the three traditional products these have replaced this is great performance. While it is too early to tell anything about reliability on this product the mower and blower have been in use longer - more than one year in the mower’s case. If reliability holds this trimmer is equal to any common task and every bit as useful as my 2-cycle oil/gas mixing carb-fouling loud power equipment. An added benefit is that I can use this trimmer early in the morning without annoying neighbors. Great product at a good price for those seeking a little less complication in their lawn maintenance lives. The string release in any trimmer I’ve ever used is a problem area. This trimmer has the advantage of allowing a complete emptying of the cartridge and a quick re-roll onto the spool when you lose one side into the cartridge while working. This is a better solution than others I’ve used to date by far.

Better than Gas

Works just like a gas trimmer. Just as powerful but far quieter. No fussing with spilled fuel. The 60v battery makes the top end a rad heavier but it well balanced.

Quality tool

Got it 2 mos. ago not used it alot but works well for it’s intended use. Does not work well as an edger will likely buy the right tool for the job when it goes on sale.

Good product.

Bought this to get rid of the annoying electric cord and the gas trimmer that would never start. Works great. Very effective on tall tough grass and weeds. Only complaint is that it is kind of heavy. Also I wish they had a bag or case for storage. Will never go back into the box. Overall very good.

VERY DEPENDABLE

I own a two acre botanical garden and wedding venue with meandering sidewalks and flower beds. The trimming/mowing takes me about 6 hrs on a weekly basis and it used to be such a pain (to my back). I upgraded to the 60 volt string trimmer and even though I still hate the trimming part of the weekly chore it's not as bad anymore. This trimmer has performed week in and week out for 2 1/2 hrs at a time. The trimmer line is much easier to change and seems to last a fair amount of time. I have to change batteries of course but I love that there is no gas oil pulling cords noise fumes etc. I now have the chainsaw lawnmower hedge trimmer and leaf blower which I use daily. I just wish Greenworks had a 60V de-thatcher.

Can be better

I bought the 80 AMP trimmer for the added power to operate attachments. After modifying my Ryobi edger I was pleased with the ability of the cut. The trimmer spool that came with the unit can be improved where a bump feed is no longer needed. Having a dual feed two line fixed unit with 105 or 155 line would be desired. Keep it simple!

More than enough power

I wanted to replace my old Battery trimmer and wanted to have all my tools on the Greenworks 60v platform. (One battery to rule them all). This trimmer covered my 1/4 acre+ yard and still had plenty of battery for my Greenworks mower. The easy feed trim head was very easy to load with string. I can’t wait until I get the blower and hedge trimmer to complete my yard work tools.
